Authorised dealers: what they are and why they cost more
An authorised dealer is a retailer that has been formally appointed by the brand itself. TAG Heuer, Rolex, Omega and every other major Swiss and designer brand maintain networks of authorised dealers who have signed contracts with the brand's official distributor.
Being an authorised dealer comes with three concrete advantages and three concrete costs:
Advantages
- You can advertise "Authorised Dealer" on your storefront - a strong trust signal for premium buyers.
- Full manufacturer warranty passes to your customer, valid at any authorised service centre worldwide.
- Access to certain in-demand references (Rolex Submariner, Patek Nautilus) that are gated to authorised dealers only.
Costs
- Contractual minimum-order volumes - typically £50,000-£250,000 committed upfront per brand.
- Physical retail presence often required - many brands will not authorise online-only sellers.
- Strict pricing controls - authorised dealers cannot discount below MAP (minimum advertised price), removing your ability to compete on price.
For 99% of new watch resellers, the authorised-dealer route is not viable. The capital requirements and physical-retail expectations are simply too high.
Wholesale distributors: the traditional middle route
Traditional wholesale distributors sit between the brand's authorised distributor and independent retailers. They buy inventory in bulk from authorised channels and resell to smaller retailers who cannot meet direct-authorisation volumes.
Wholesale pricing typically runs 30-50% below authorised retail, with the trade-off that you buy stock upfront and take on the inventory risk. This is the model that has powered every independent watch shop and jeweller for the last century.
For online sellers, traditional wholesale has one big drawback: you commit capital to stock that might not sell, and you handle your own fulfilment. Great for high-turnover physical retail, less ideal for lean e-commerce.
Dropship suppliers: the modern hybrid
Dropshipping combines the price advantages of wholesale with the operational simplicity of no-stock retail. A dropship supplier holds the inventory, you list it on your store, and when a sale happens, the supplier ships direct to your customer under your brand.
You pay the wholesale cost only after your customer has paid you, so there is no capital risk. In return, you typically pay slightly less discount than a traditional wholesaler would give (they take some margin for holding the stock), and delivery times can be a day or two longer than same-store fulfilment.
For most online watch resellers, dropshipping is the right entry model. You can prove what sells before committing capital, and once you have data, you can graduate to bulk wholesale on your top movers if the maths works.
Grey market: what it means and when it is legitimate
Grey market refers to genuine branded products that are sold outside the brand's authorised distribution channel. The stock is 100% authentic - it comes from authorised distributors somewhere in the world, but has moved through parallel channels to reach the seller.
Grey market is legal in most jurisdictions including the UK, US, and EU. It is a well-established practice in the watch industry and represents a significant share of online sales on Chrono24, WatchBox, and independent watch retailers.
What grey market typically means for you as a reseller:
- Prices 20-40% below authorised retail on identical genuine product
- No manufacturer warranty (or limited warranty from your supplier)
- Full authenticity guarantee from the supplier
Grey market has a bad reputation among consumers who confuse it with counterfeit. It is not counterfeit - the difference is who the product was originally sold to. Educated customers understand this distinction and often prefer grey market for the significant price savings.
Ex-display and refurbished stock: another legitimate category
Beyond grey market, some suppliers offer ex-display or refurbished pieces. Ex-display means a watch that was on display in a retail environment - fully functional and never worn, but sold at a discount because it is not technically "new". Refurbished pieces have been serviced or restored, sometimes with non-original replacement parts.
Both categories should always be disclosed clearly to your end customer. Selling ex-display or refurbished as "new" is fraud in most jurisdictions and will destroy your business through returns, chargebacks, and platform bans.
For guidance on how to disclose properly, see our TAG Heuer wholesale page which shows how condition status is presented to your customer at point of import.
Which model is right for your business?
A quick decision framework:
- If you have £200k+ capital and a physical shop: Pursue authorised dealer status with 1-2 brands.
- If you have £10k-£50k capital and a proven online store: Traditional wholesale for your top 10 sellers, dropship for the rest.
- If you are just starting or have proven demand but limited capital: Dropship - it removes the biggest risk without capping your upside.
