New in box: the baseline

The simplest category. A watch that has never been sold to an end consumer, never worn, never displayed. Comes in original manufacturer packaging with all seals intact, original paperwork, and manufacturer warranty active from purchase.

New-in-box is what customers imagine when they see the word "new" on your product page. If your stock is not new-in-box, do not use the word "new" without qualification.

Ex-display: fully functional, never sold

An ex-display watch has been used as a retail display piece - typically sitting under glass in an authorised retailer's shop, occasionally being tried on by customers, but never sold to an end consumer. The watch itself is unworn in any meaningful sense (no wrist-time) and is fully functional.

What "ex-display" typically means practically:

Ex-display is completely legitimate stock and represents excellent value for customers - typically 30-50% below authorised retail on identical pieces that visually cannot be told apart from new-in-box.

Refurbished: serviced, may contain replacement parts

Refurbished means the watch has been serviced, cleaned, and restored to functional condition. This typically involves:

The critical point for resellers: refurbished watches may contain non-original manufacturer parts. This is standard industry practice and does not affect the watch's authenticity - the case, movement, and dial are original - but the service parts are aftermarket. Many brands including TAG Heuer will not warranty a watch that has had non-original service parts fitted.

This must be disclosed to your customer. See our TAG Heuer wholesale page for an example of how the disclosure statement is automatically added to the product description when you import from us.

Pre-owned: previously sold, previously worn

Pre-owned watches have been sold to an end consumer, worn, and then resold. This includes vintage watches, watches sold through Chrono24 or WatchBox by private sellers, and watches taken as trade-ins.

Pre-owned watches vary enormously in condition and value. Some are genuine collector pieces worth more than new. Others are heavily worn examples of common references worth substantially less than new. Pricing is highly individual per piece.

Most dropship suppliers do not carry pre-owned stock because pricing cannot be standardised. Swiss Watch Network specifically does not deal in pre-owned - our supply is either new-in-box, ex-display, or refurbished with clear disclosure.

Grey market vs the above

Grey market is a separate axis from condition. A grey market watch can be new-in-box, ex-display, or refurbished - the "grey market" label refers to the distribution channel, not the physical condition of the watch. See our companion article Wholesale Watches vs Authorised Dealers for the full explanation.

How to disclose properly on your storefront

The disclosure standard we recommend to every partner:

Example disclosure language for TAG Heuer refurbished stock:

"This timepiece is ex-display stock and may have undergone refurbishment or servicing. It may contain non-original TAG Heuer components introduced during servicing. Every piece is fully inspected and guaranteed to be in working condition. These watches are NOT sold as authorised TAG Heuer retail stock and are not covered by TAG Heuer's manufacturer warranty."

If you import from Swiss Watch Network, this disclosure block is automatically prepended to the product description at import time so you cannot accidentally sell without disclosure.

Why disclosure is your competitive advantage

Bad actors in the watch resale industry hide condition and sell ex-display or refurbished as "new". This wins them a few extra pounds per sale but destroys their business through:

Honest disclosure is not a weakness - it is a trust signal that converts smart customers who understand they are getting a genuinely better price than authorised retail. Long term, disclosed sellers build the sustainable businesses.
